Curio Cabinet 09

Our semi-regular roundup of JH curiosities — things we saved, shared, or talked about this month.

Always searching for thoughtfully unexpected gifts for friends and unexpected gestures. Might we recommend:

[1] An endearingly imperfect ceramic chess piece by artist Aidan Koch (and dare we suggest its ideal counterpart, our Chess Signet.)

[2] A perfectly atypical candlestick inspired by the stacking of grapes.

[3] A chic desk accessory in the form of petite, Artichoke-hued scissors

Croissant Dreams:
Could a cuter coin pouch exist? We think not.

Desk Objects:
Deep-diving into David Byrne’s desk objets
(...do we need a rolodex now?)

A Legacy to Preserve:
Finding inspiration in the work of self-taught Ukrainian folk artist Maria Prymachenko, and commemorating her work after nearly 30 works were tragically destroyed in a fire amidst the current conflict.
We’d be remiss if we didn’t express our deep sadness and discomfort in struggling to keep an “as usual” external mask up while immersed in the present political turmoil.
We stand in solidarity with Ukraine, and acknowledge our deep privilege in being able to zoom out and hold these feelings next to one another.

Dune x DWC:

100% of profits from our Dune polish are donated biannually to an evolving roster of nonprofit organizations.
Through July 2022 sales will be donated to the LA Downtown Women’s Center, focused on serving and empowering women experiencing homelessness and formerly homeless women (we also partnered with them for last year’s candle collaboration!)

Rock Candy:

[1] Bespoke rock-shaped cakes from Brooklyn’s Yip Studio
— this white Matcha Passionfruit cake is a true work of art.

[2]  And in non-edible form, admiring candy-esque rock sculptures from artist Dawn Benedict.

Carry-On Companions:
[1] A minty lip balm deserving of a cult following.

[2] Traditional Italian pastilles in (pleasingly?) medicinal flavors reminiscent of a bitter digestif. Highly recommend the
Anise flavor.

En Route:
[1] Looking forward to a future Ojai trip to try the newly-opened Rory’s Place

[2] Indulging in sensorial escapism with this fragrance inspired by digging into the garden, with “top notes of tomato leaf, grass, and freshly chopped salad…”

[3] Thrilled to see one of our favorite vintage shops open a NYC outpost.
